Why purchase this $1 Australia 2021-P 1 oz Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle?

The Perth Mint continues a relatively young but extremely popular series with this latest edition of the Silver Wedge-Tailed Eagle. After having two-year designs at the start, the series now has one-year only designs from John Mercanti with each new edition. The 2019 and 2020 issues depicted the fearsome bird searching for its meal and then swooping down for it. The 2021 design continues this narrative, showing the predator after victoriously catching its next meal, ready to eat! With a mintage of just 50,000 pieces this coin may not be available for long!

  • This coin is $1 legal tender in Australia.
  • The coin was struck from 1 oz of .9999 fine silver.
  • This coin bears the Perth Mint's "P" mint mark on the reverse.
  • This coin is part of a mintage of just 50,000 pieces.
  • The piece is part of the eighth issue in the Wedge-Tailed Eagle Series.
  • The series marked the first ever collaboration between a U.S. Mint engraver and a foreign mint.
  • This coin will arrive in GEM Brilliant Uncirculated condition.

Powerful Wedge-Tailed Eagle Design by John Mercanti

Obverse: The coin's obverse bears a right-side portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that was designed by Jody Clark. The monarch's shoulders are open to the holder, and she wears earrings, a necklace, and her Royal Diamond Diadem. Her name, "ELIZABETH II," is inscribed on the rim frame, as are the name of the issuing country, "AUSTRALIA," and the coin's face value, "1 DOLLAR."

Reverse: John Mercanti's reverse design shows a wedge-tailed eagle carrying its next meal, a snake, in its talons. The bird spreads its wings while bending over to take its first bite out of the serpent. Inscriptions along the rim frame note the name of the coin, "AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE," its date, "2021," and its weight and purity, "1 OZ 9999 SILVER."

John Mercanti served as the U.S. Mint's twelfth Chief Engraver for part of his nearly four decades with the institution. His work with the institution made him the most prolific designer of coins and medals in American history.
