The $2.50 Liberty Gold Quarter Eagle is one of the most historic and accessible pre-1933 U.S. gold coins ever produced. Minted from 1840 to 1907, this classic piece contains .12094 troy ounces of gold and features the timeless Liberty Head design by Christian Gobrecht. Its smaller denomination made it a popular coin for everyday transactions in the 19th century.
The obverse displays Lady Liberty facing left, wearing a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies. The reverse showcases a majestic heraldic eagle with a shield across its breast, clutching arrows and an olive branch — symbols of strength and peace. The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the denomination “2½ D.” complete the design.
Each coin is preserved in About Uncirculated (AU) condition, exhibiting sharp detail and much of its original mint luster, with only minimal signs of wear. These coins survived the Gold Reserve Act of 1934, which led to the melting of millions of U.S. gold coins, making the surviving examples increasingly scarce and desirable.
A Piece of Early American Gold History
The Liberty Quarter Eagle series was struck during a time of great American expansion, from the California Gold Rush through the early 20th century. Many of the Charlotte and Dahlonega Mint issues, in particular, are prized by collectors for their rarity and Southern mint heritage. Each surviving example is a tangible relic from the nation’s pre-paper money era, where gold was true money in hand.
