The coin is part of the fourth issue in the British Royal Mint's Queen's Beasts collection, which will consist of a total of ten coins, each of which bears one of the ten creatures that were present in statue form in Westminster Abbey at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. This coin was struck from .9999 fine silver.

Powerful Unicorn of Scotland Design by Jody Clark

Queen Elizabeth II's portrait on the obverse is enhanced by a new guilloche design. The portrait was the creation of Jody Clark and shows the monarch wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem, the crown that she wore at her coronation in 1953. "5 POUNDS," the coin's face value, is inscribed along the rim, as are the monarch's name and abbreviated title, "ELIZABETH II D.G. REG. F.D."

Jody Clark also designed the reverse image, the Unicorn of Scotland, which he shows raising its front legs. One of those legs holds a shield, which bears another symbol of Scotland, a lion rampant. The name of the featured creature, "UNICORN OF SCOTLAND," is among several rim inscriptions.
