Obverse: Otto Schultz designed the obverse, which features a left-side portrait of Paul Kruger. Kruger was a central figure in the country's politics and was the third President of the South African Republic. He is joined by a pair of rim inscriptions, "SUID-AFRIKA" and "SOUTH AFRICA," the name of the issuing country in Afrikaans and English.

Reverse: Coert Steynberg's reverse design features a springbok antelope, the country's national symbol. It bounds across the plains of South Africa. Split to either side of it are the first and last two numerals of the date, "2021." "KRUGERRAND," the name of the coin, arches over the image, while the coin's metal content, "FYNSILWER 1 OZ FINE SILVER," and face value, "R1," are noted on the rim below.
