The $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle is one of the most innovative and admired U.S. gold coins ever struck. Designed by Bela Lyon Pratt, it was issued from 1908 to 1929 and features a revolutionary incuse (sunken relief) design — the first of its kind in U.S. coinage. This technique caused the design to be recessed below the coin’s surface rather than raised above it, giving it a unique, sculpted appearance that collectors cherish to this day.
The obverse depicts a bold Native American chief wearing a full headdress, surrounded by 13 stars with “LIBERTY” above and the date below. The reverse showcases a majestic bald eagle standing on a bundle of arrows and an olive branch, encircled by the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Each coin contains .12094 troy ounces of .900 fine gold.
Each piece is preserved in About Uncirculated (AU) condition, showing only the slightest traces of circulation wear while retaining most of its original mint luster. Surviving examples are prized not only for their gold content but also for their beauty, rarity, and direct link to America’s golden age of coin artistry under President Theodore Roosevelt.
The Revolutionary Indian Head Design
When first introduced, Bela Lyon Pratt’s recessed design broke artistic convention and was even met with controversy due to its “engraved-in” appearance. Today, it is celebrated as one of the most daring and elegant works of early 20th-century U.S. numismatic design. Together with the $5 Indian Half Eagle, this series symbolizes a period when U.S. coinage embraced beauty, symbolism, and craftsmanship like never before.
