In 1967, the South African Mint issue d the first Gold Krugerrands. The series has a fascinating history that includes boycotts that resulted from the issuing nation's apartheid policy. With the end of apartheid, the coin grew in popularity throughout the world. While many countries issued silver counterparts to their gold coins, South Africa only began doing so when it issued the first ever Silver Krugerrands in 2017 to mark the 50th anniversary of the gold series. This silver proof is now part of that tradition. The coin was struck from 2 oz of .999 fine silver and is part of a mintage of just 10,000 pieces.

Featuring Coert Steynberg's Exquisite Springbok Design

The obverse features a left-side portrait of one of the most important figures in South African history, Paul Kruger. Kruger was the third President of the South African Republic. Designed by Otto Schultz, the image shows the leader with his characteristic thick, long beard. Along with the portrait are inscriptions of the issuing country's name in Afrikaans, "SUID-AFRIKA," and English, "SOUTH AFRICA."

On the reverse is springbok antelope, South Africa's national animal. Coert Steynberg designed the image, in which the graceful creature is shown bounding across the South African plains. Its head is turned slightly to the right of the holder, offering a better look at the animal's face and horns. The name of the coin, "KRUGERRAND," arches over the image, while the date, "2020," is split to the left and right of it. Inscriptions on the bottom portion of the rim note the coin's weight in Afrikaans and English, "FYNSILWER 2 OZ FINE SILVER," and its face value, "R2."

Finally, the coin was certified First Day of Issue because it was submitted to NGC through an exclusive process. Grading information comes provided on a label that bears an image of a springbok.
